Officially muslim

My official religion is still Islam. I haven't made any efforts to change that either as I haven't talked things through with my family. I am also concerned about the legal repercussions of leaving Islam while being a Pakistani citizen. Has any of you readers ever considered renouncing Islam officially? Do you know of the legal repercussions? Can apostates legally be sentenced to death in Pakistan?

  1. I recently got a passport made and had to declare my religion Islam. I don't think it's a good idea to leave Islam officially, in a country like Pakistan. I don't know the exact repercussions, though.

  2. I was able to find the Apostasy Act 2006 bill that was proposed to the National Assembly a few years back. I have not been able to confirm whether the bill was passed or not. The death penalty is reserved only for males. You should be able to get off *only* with life imprisonment :P.

I do hope that the bill wasn't passed.

  3. It is a very bad idea to officially leave Islam.

As long as you are living in Pakistan, at least.

  4. legal repercussions are not a big deal. This decision is all about your inner self.

Personally i think it is alwasy a good idea keep holding one branch of tree or in simple words keep your options open. Because like all humans our thinking change with time. It is impossible that you will think exactly the same in future.

  5. I agree with Butters. Stick with it. It's more convenient in a lot of ways.

  6. While it seems more honest to have your official records reflect your true self, it seems that the decision to leave Islam as a Pakistani citizen is far from inconsequential. Thanks for the feedback everyone. Much appreciated.
