Disturbing statistics

The Pew Global Attitudes Project recently released a report on the views of Pakistanis on extremism, the war on terror and related matters. The report highlights a healthy trend of more and more Pakistanis seeing the Taliban and al Qaeda as negative elements. What prompted this post however were the alarming statistics on people's views on the punishments suggested by Islam. From the report:

One of the ironies in the survey is the extent to which Pakistanis embrace some of the severe laws associated with the Taliban and al Qaeda, even as they reject Islamic extremism and these extremist groups. The new poll finds broad support for harsh punishments: 78% favor death for those who leave Islam; 80% favor whippings and cutting off hands for crimes like theft and robbery; and 83% favor stoning adulterers.

While these statistics shouldn't be very surprising given that most Pakistanis are rather conservative and deeply revere Islam, they still managed to come as a very rude shock.

  2. If you have a never ending life ahead of you and what ever wrong you will do here will have an effect on your next life then what will you do.

Imagine if a person has done something wrong in his worldly life and he is in his next life which is very very long. So he will be suffering there for a very very long time. This suffering can be of any form, from not meeting Allah to burning in hell to isolation, even if you have a palace as jail you will not want to stay there for a very long time. Believe me he would be cursing the time when he committed unlawful and wishing if someone or something would have stoped him. As written in Quran, on that day people will be requesting and crying to go back to their earthly lives for a few seconds to do something good but they will not be allowed. So how can we take crimes lightly.

Islamic punishments are more of a warning to those who dont understand the consequences of their deeds. Fear can stop them. If someone who is very close to you is moving towards danger and is not listening to you then you have to take some action. As said by Allah every good or bad deed we do in this life is for ourselves, Allah needs nothing.
